AP Language and Composition

REFLECTION ON QUARTER 1

Theme In the quarter 1, the theme is the American Dream. The American Dream is when a person works hard enough to live a good lifestyle for them and their families. Texts were used such as "The Declaration of Independence" by Thomas Jefferson and "Declaration of sentiments and resolutions" by Elizabeth Stady Canton both want to have equality either for men or women. We also did an independent reading on "The Great Gatsby"where nick narrates that Gatsby is rich and living the America Dream. Nick´s cousin was born with it so she didn't work to live the American Dream. To create an analytical paper we used rhetorical devices such as ethos, logos and pathos. The rhetorical devices gave support to the claim on the American Dream. Jefferson declares that men should be equal while canton says the women should be equal the same as men. I agree with the Vanity Fair article on the American Dream . In recent years, the term has often been interpreted to mean “making it big” or “striking it rich.” in the article, it states how the American dream's definition has changed throughout the years. Now it is shown that depending how wealthy you are or getting wealthy you are living the American Dream. " America was truly a new world, a place where one could live one’s life and pursue one’s goals unburdened by older societies’ prescribed ideas of class, caste, and social hierarchy" This is what the American Dream is defined to change their lives to something better.

Precis Columnist Rhetorical Analysis Reflection:

A columnist is a writer who creates an opinion in a newspaper. They may use rhetorical devices such as ethos, pathos and logos to show their purpose. The columnist rhetorical précis paper helps to show how writers use rhetorical devices in their writing to support their purpose. In a column the audience may depend on what the columnist is writing about if it's sports then the audience will most likely be fans of the sport or who are interested in sports. Columnists write on whatever topics come into their minds.

Clarance Page is a columnist whose topics are mostly on politics. Clarance page's two columns are critiquing presidential candidate Donald Trump's actions. Clearances two columns are "Trump Lost the Battle against Himself " and "Trump releases his inner ape " clarance's purpose is to inform trump's behavior in certain situations. Clarance uses Logos in both columns to show logic on what trump does and how that there are limits to behavior.

Great Gatsby: Yes I'd agree with the author on the American Dream. The American Dream is where people complete their dreams by working hard. In the Great Gatsby is states " it beat faster and faster as Daisy's white face came up to his own. He knew that when he kissed this girl, and forever wed his unutterable visions to her perishable breath, his mind would never romp again like the mind of God." Nick states how Gatsby wanted more to please daisy because she was rich and he was not satisfied with it. In the "Declaration of Independence" by Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson states "men are created equal" and in "Declaration of sentiments and resolutions " Stanton says that women should be treated fairly as men. In the United States everyone wants to lives satisfying lifestyle for them and their families. .

Jefferson-Stanton Comparison Rhetorical Analysis Compare and Contrast

In my next formal paper, what I will improve is connecting my analysis more with evidence. I will build up more on my thesis so that it is interesting to the reader.

Freedom For Every Person Should Be Equal Equality is for each one of us to have freedom and to be able to have rights. In the Speech “Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson in his speech, Jefferson declares the separation of the thirteen colonies for independence on equality and freedom for men. In the speech “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions”, Elizabeth Cady Stanton also speaks on equality but for women’s rights to be the same as men's rights. In the “Declaration of Independence” by Jefferson and “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” by Stanton, they both uses ethos, pathos and tone differently to advance their claims on equality. Both authors also use logos and repetition to support their arguments on freedom and equality. They also advances American Dream because both argue that people should live without fear and control, but in freedom and equality. In both speeches,Thomas Jefferson and Elizabeth Cady Stanton use ethos in another way to support their argument, and to show the vision the American Dream. In the speech “Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson it's states “the history of present king of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states.” Jefferson states Britain’s government is unfair for every men. Jefferson uses ethos to show the Great Britain's government is a tyranny, the ruler prevents men from any rights. While in the “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” by Stanton it's states “The history of Mankind is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations on part of a man toward woman, having indirect object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over her” Stanton states that the men's characterization to persuade how men are taking women's rights and that both men and women are not equivalent to each other with rights. Jefferson uses ethos to show the Great Britain's control on the men's and Stanton uses ethos to show the man's character towards women is unfair . In the “Declaration Of Independence” and “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions” both writers use pathos differently because of their purposes. In the “Declaration of Independence” Jefferson states “He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives our people.” Jefferson discusses the dictator's actions of Great Britain's government, how they treat men's with unjust. They do not have freedom to do what they want which is part of the American Dream. In the “Declaration Of Sentiments and Resolutions” Stanton states “Having deprived her the first right of a citizen, the elective franchise, thereby leaving her without representation in the halls of legislation, he has oppressed her on all sides” , Stanton discusses how men deprive women's rights which shows sympathy because women cannot live there life that men's do. Men live the American Dream, which is to have freedom and have rights. Stanton uses pathos to support how men obtain a women's rights while men have freedom. This leads to the American Dream because they want their audience to know that each group should have equality and be free to love the life with no control over men and women. Jefferson and Stanton use tone in a different way to persuade their audience, Jefferson tone is commanding while Stanton’s is formal. In the “Declaration of independence” Jefferson states “That these United colonies are and of the Right ought to be free and independent states, that they are Absolutes from all allegiance to the Britain crown. “ Jefferson declares that the thirteen United colonies will separate from Great Britain's government. He uses the words “Will” to show that they will depart for for freedom. He wants the audience to know that this action will be done so. In the “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions “ Stanton puts in words “and because women do feel themselves aggrieved, oppressed and, fraudulently deprived of their most sacred rights, we insist that they have immediate admission to all the rights and privileges which holding to them citizens of the United States” Stanton's tone is professional to make the men and legislators change the laws for women to make them equal as men. Jefferson's tone is commanding because he declares the colonies will separate while Stanton's tone is formal to persuade the audience that men and women should be equal. Tone advances to the American Dream because each speaker wants men or women to have freedom and rights. Logos is used by the speakers speeches and are similar to advance their arguments towards inequality and the American Dream. In the “Declaration of independence” Jefferson states “To prove this let facts be submitted to a candid world.. He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good” Jefferson lists facts of truth to demonstrate Great Britain's cruelty on the citizens. He wants the audience to know why the separation is happening. Stanton also is similar “To prove this let facts be submitted to as a candid world, He has never permitted her to exercise her inalienable rights to the elective franchise” Stanton starts listing facts to what men prevent women from freedom. Both speakers use facts to show what each person prevents from the other to have. This also advances the American Dream because they don't get to have freedom. At first men are prevented to have rights in Jeffery speech and once men have that power they prevent women to having these. The two speakers use repetition to build their arguments on freedom and equality, with the American Dream. In “Declaration of independence” Jefferson reiterates “He has refused “ and Stanton also states “He has denied “ to which they are similar meaning to show that men or the tyrants deny freedom and equality on the citizens. Both speakers repeat “He has” to emphasize how the leader at that time turned to a dictator and have limited their rights as a citizens. This advances on the American Dream because the speakers are asking for freedom and equality. In conclusion both authors, Thomas Jefferson in the “Declaration of Independence” and “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolution” by Elizabeth Cady Stanton use repetition and logos to build up their argument on equality and freedom. Jefferson and Stanton use ethos, pathos and tone differently to advance their purpose on equality in the American. The American Dream is being able to have freedom and rights. “Declaration of Independence “ is purpose is to make men equal and a ”Declaration of sentiments” and resolutions is to have equality for women the same as men. .

Favorite Quarter 1 40-Minute Timed Write:

My favorite time write is the synthesis time write because you get to use different sources to help you build up your side which you agree on. Synthesis means " combination of ideas to form a theory or system" from google where you derive texts and you support this with ideas that may agree on your arguement. You need to understand the context and see the perspective of the subject in other texts that you may use when writing a synthesis essay.

Quarter 1 Reflection; In AP Language I learned the SOAPSTONE, what a Columinst is, how to write a five paragraph essay, what a thesis should include, what a synthesis essay is. How to write a five paragraph essay is important because this is necessary when writing an essay so you don't include irrelevant information. What I gained from is what a synthesis is and the American Dream while reading the great gatsby. For quarter two I want to read the book the eyes were watching God. I want to learn what parts of a synthesis. I wish we would skipped the Columinst papers because it really didn't seem to show what writers use for their texts .

Quarter 2

Their Eyes Were Watching God:

In the book ¨There Eyes were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, Hurston first starts off with Janie as an adult. This is a third person speaking because of how the narrator describes  Janie is a black woman who tries find herself. During this journey she is married to three mens.  Diction is significant in the story because they way the people of the community speak is different. The words are difficult to understand yet it shows how janie was accustomed back than.  A woman she is gender is used stereotypically, in the book woman should be at home cooking while men are the workers.

Gender is an important part of this story, since men do not let woman have a voice. Janie does not let that get in her way. From the start of the book janie is vulnerable and does not have a strong voice. When she first marries her first husband Logan KIllacks, her grandma arranged this marriage because of him being a wealthy and a respectful man. Later on janie feels as if her husband does not love her, so she leaves him. Janie than later meets joe stark. Joe stark is a man who moved from another part of a country and is also is a buisnessmen. When she meets him, she sees something different in him than logan. Jodie starks is then the mayor of eatonville. During their marriage, joe starts to treat janie different than a men. He only permits janie to work in the store and not drink nor play games. Eventually she becomes gloomy with joe and he then dies.

Janie then meets tea cake one evening near the store. They speak for a while and become friends. Tea cake is different than her past marriages. He allows her to play games, talk to other people. She leaves eatonville and moves in with teacake.

SYNTHESIS PAPER Final Draft:

Synthesis Essay Identity is qualities and characteristics that causes a person to stand out and be more unique. Race is a physical characteristics and various assume race forms an identity. But a person’s identity cannot be formed by the color a person appears to be. What makes up an identity is culture. Culture is what languages the person speaks, the social group they interact with, and beliefs they inherit from their ancestors. Language is a portion of culture, which helps a person to form their identity. In the text “Aria: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood” by Richard Rodriguez, Rodriguez states “All while her sounds would assure me: you are home now; come closer; inside with us.” Rodriguez recounts an anecdote of how he felt isolated by the public because of the languages he spoke, was different. But when he would come home, Spanish his language, he would feel a sense of calm and safe place. Richards identity established part of because he spoke Spanish. In the text it also states “ At about the time I no longer bothered to listen with care to the sounds of English in public, I grew careless about listening to the sounds family members made when they spoke” In Rodriguez childhood he would hear sounds of English words and know the difference between English and Spanish words. Rodriguez speaking and learning English helped him form an identity of being an American. In the article “Link Between language, cultural identity studied” by Nathan Bierma it states “Language use is the key to intercultural communication. It's up to linguists to bring to light the ways that linguistic prejudice can happen, and to help us see the things that are hidden and invisible to us in our language use, because we naturalize whatever is normal for us." In the article it states how language is important part of culture which makes an identity. Without language how will you from an identity. Who the person associates influences or affects to who they will become. Social group is a piece of culture that creates the person's identity. In the text “Their Eyes were watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston it states “Janie loved the conversation and sometime she thought of good stories on the mule but joe had forbidden her to indulge” Janie was married to joe, and as her wife he wouldn't let her join a conversation with the public because she was a women. This prevented her from speaking from her mind. This led to be quiet. Compared to when she was with tea cake in text it states “Somebody wanted her to play. Somebody thought its natural for her play. That was nice”. Once Janie finds and married tea cake, he treats her differently. He treats her the same as a man who is able to do what they want. Because she associated with a man who respected her and with other surroundings, her identity changed and this lead to her to become more outgoing than being shy with joe. The location, is part of culture which forms an identity. In the text “Once More to the Lake” by E.B White, it states “We went fishing the first morning. I felt the same damasks covering the worms in the bait can, and saw the dragon fly alight on there tip of my rod as it hovers a few inches from the surface of the water.” White recounts when he went to visit the lake and brings it back to memory. In the text it also states “ This was the American family at play escaping the city heat, wondering whether the newcomers in the camp at the head of the cove were ‘common’ or ‘nice’.” White states that his family was the American family. White remembers the details when he went to the lake as a child. Although various people argue that race is what identifies you. Race is your ancestors and physical characteristics that appear. But what this argument fails to consider is that the color of skin should not have to define who you are. In the text “Indian Education by Sherman Alexie It states “ he states ‘Indians, indians , indians ….. And yeah I am Indian, Indian, indian” Alexie was treated unfair or always picked on because he was an indian. The teacher never thought about his personality or what kind of person he was. Because of his skin color she had issue with Alexie. The text also states “After that no spoke to me for another five hundred years” , alexia said his name and because his name was from Indians people didn't bother to be his friend. Race should not identity a person. Race is stereotyping a person's background. This aff cited Alexie because he wasn't able to be treated the same and was hiding himself. In the picture http://www.reachtoteachrecruiting.com/guides/thailand/culture-in-thailand/. A little Thailand girl is shown. She appears to have traditional clothing from her ancestors m. What she dresses affects who she is because he inherited traditional clothing that was passed down from generation to generation.! In conclusion identity is who a person is and culture supports this. The language you speak, who you associate yourself with and your location are a part of that. Race is your appearance that may seem to be part that identifies you but that should not define a person but rather what they believe and how they act.

SYNTHESIS PAPER ReFlectIon

Yes my essay answered the prompt. I chose culture. The number of sentences I put is sufficient. Using a picture as a visual for my essay was useful because people could see how an image supports an argument. Yes I am confident that my sources are reliable because they showed support to what the author writes. In the MLA style I learned that this is important to cite other sources that you used. In order to feel more comfortable in using MLA o would review on how to cite other images. In the MLA It was also difficult to find information to cite such as the city. The easiest part of the essay was choosing my sources that supported my essay. A challenge in writing the essay was doing a rebuttal. Yes j am confident in the organization in my essay because I started with my introduction, argument, counter argument and rebuttal and finally my conclusion. My arguement was easy to write because I was able to fix it in to persuade my audience , while rebuttal was hard because it would make me question ideas.

Quarter 2 Reflection:

In quarter 2 I learned what a synthesis paper, where you uses sources to help build an arguement. In order  to write one a synthesis paper. How to support your claim. You need a variety of references such as experts, newspaper, anecdotes, facts. What grading their are for types of essays. Identitu is characteristics that make a person unique or stand out from others.  Understanding the reasons for Socratic Seminar is to help one another to understand a text.  An argument, counter argument and rebuttal to help you build an essay.

The most meaningful item I learned in AP English is how to present a counter argument. Then with a counter argument you rebut it. I gained how to use multiple sources . This helped show facts to support my thesis. I wish we skipped the bibliography since it was difficult.

In quarter 3  I am looking forward t what the theme/topic is. The texts we will read and discuss. How an argumentative essay is presented. How can we improve our writing skills. Items that we may learn to help us. The major book we will read and how is is related to the topic.
